ZONTA IN A CHANGING SOCIETY – WAYS AND MEANS OF RESPONSE TO EUROPEAN CHALLENGES

Six members from our Zonta e-Club of Finland 1 and 13 from other zonta clubs we made a memorable Seminar Trip on February 1-5 to Wien. Besides the official seminar program we had also our own extra program. We visited also WAVE, UN and EMBASSY. Thanks to Erja Lindholm, President of Zonta e-Club of Finland 1, who arranged the trip and the additional program with Katriina Järvenpää!

We lived in heart of the city where we arrived already one day before the Seminar. First evening, after City Sightseeing Tour we had a nice dinner at the Italian ”roof” restaurant of our hotel. Fantastic scenery to St. Stephen’s Cathedral and other city lights.

Also Tuija Kirveskari-Tähtinen, Governor of District 20 joined us at dinner, and our newest e-Club member Virpi Heinonen-Kiiski received her Zonta badge.

Second day we visited WAVE which is a network of European women’s organisations preventing and eliminating violence against women and children. We had two professional and informative presentations and interesting discussion.

From WAVE presentation some of us continued the day by partcipating the  ZI Leadership Development Training.

In the afternoon most of our group visited both United Nations and also the Embassy of Finland Vienna. Both very informative and interesting visits.

And in the evening we all enjoyed the Seminar GET TOGETHER at Heuriger Schneider-Gössel with more than two hundred European Zonta sisters, also Sonja Hönig Schough, ZI President and other ZI women attended. What an experience to all of us but especially to our youngest e-Club members Mari and Virpi to meet her!

Sonja was the Introductor of the Saturday Seminar Workshop SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS AND ZONTA’S MISSION, which I myself attended with e-Club sisters Irma and Katriina. Sonja emphasized GOAL 5 Gender Equality and also GOAL 4 Quality Education – as most important goals for us too, to achieve our Zonta Mission and goals.

“The Right to the City – the Urban Agenda 2030″ Dr.-Ing. Irene Wiese – v. Ofen Zonta Club of Essen, Germany

After the Seminar and the Workshops we all were invited to Cocktail Reception by the female Major of the City of Vienna Sybille Straubinger – at City Town Hall, i.e. WIENER RATHAUS. After the Buffet Dinner Erja took a picture of our group on the stairs.

We had good possibilities to drop in shopping from our Hotel Royal during the previous days between our programs. So as the last day was Sunday we could enjoy not only the delicious offerings of the lovely Cafes but also art experiences.  Many of us visited  Albertina Museum’s great exhibitions.

I like to be member in Zonta organization especially because of its internationality. Once again I came back home feeling so much new energy. I have felt the same Zonta Spirit also in other Zonta events like the European Seminar at Tampere a few years ago, Nizza Convention last summer..

Danke schön, und auf Wiedersehen, Vienne!
